What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is an evidence based approach to improving our mental health. It is a way to communicate what is happening inside of us, without always having to put it into words. It is not at all a process about being “good” at art. Instead it is about communication, self awareness and accessing parts of ourselves we may want to get to know a little better.

In a session we will use art materials as a tool to aid communication and self expression. We can begin sessions gently, recognising that many people have not engaged in art making since they were young when there was often a firm value on how good a final piece was. Art therapy does not have such values. Instead, we will concentrate on how the process feels to you.

It is a process that can be done in conversation or in silence, it is entirely your choice and can change from session to session.

How can art therapy help us to navigate traumatic experiences?

Art therapy offers a unique and powerful way to address the complex emotional and psychological effects of trauma. Trauma can be difficult to verbalize and process, as it can be stored in the body and the unconscious mind. Art therapy provides an alternative method of communication and expression that can bypass the need for verbalization. When we engage in creative activities, we can explore and express our emotions, experiences, and memories in a non-threatening and non-judgmental way. This can help to release pent-up emotions and reduce the intensity of traumatic memories. Art therapy can also help us to develop a greater sense of self-awareness, self-esteem, and control over our lives as it provides a safe and supportive environment where individuals can connect with their inner selves and begin the healing process. The process of creating art can also be meditative and calming, which can be especially helpful for those who are experiencing symptoms of anxiety or hyperarousal.
